MUSKEGON – The Ancilla College softball team split a doubleheader with NJCAA No. 7 Muskegon Community College, losing the first game 2-1 and winning the second game 7-3.

Muskegon’s (27-5, 8-2 MCCAA) Ashley White was the star of the first game, striking out eleven Ancilla (6-19, 1-8 MCCAA) batters and allowing one unearned run on one hit by Lindsay Duke in the complete game victory.

Ancilla jumped out in game two with three runs in the top of the first. With two outs in the inning, Demi Schrader doubled to left, followed by a Duke walk. Kristen Helmick then tripled to right to score Schrader and Duke. Kayla Bauer plated Helmick with a single to center to end the first inning scoring.

The Chargers stretched their lead to 5-0 in the sixth. Duke led off the inning with a double to left followed by a Helmick walk and a Bauer single loaded the bases. Catcher Trina Bauer picked up two RBI with her double to right, but Ancilla left both Bauer’s on base with three straight outs.

Muskegon answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Ancilla jumped right back with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Schrader led the offense with a one out single and moved to third on Duke’s double. Helmick’s singled to score Schrader, and Duke scored on a Kayla Bauer fielder’s choice.

Allison Chiles, Helmick, and Amber Edmundson combined to allow just four hits as the Ancilla pitchers in game two.

The game two victory was the first win in Ancilla softball history over a top ten team.

Ancilla hosts Jackson Community College (11-16, 6-5 MCCAA) today. The day will begin with the completion of a suspended game from last Saturday, followed by the originally scheduled double header.
