John served on many community boards and committees, working tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all in the county. He also worked in the rental home business. In 2008, John retired from the post of Penn Township supervisor, having served 22 years.

On Aug. 13, 1950 he married Marilyn Squires, his high school sweetheart, who survives along with their children: Janeen (Robert) Godfrey, of Carmel, Ind.; Jill (Thomas) Vihtelic, of Cassopolis; and John S. Gore, of Cassopolis. Six grandchildren also survive, of whom John is very proud: Dr. David (Stacie) Godfrey, of Williamsville, N.Y.; Jenna Godfrey, of Durham, N.C.; Andrew Vihtelic, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Patrick (Sarah) Vihtelic, of San Francisco, Calif.; John Daniel Gore, of Grand Rapids; and Molly Gore, of Cassopolis and East Lansing. His brother, Charles W. (Alice) Gore, of Orlando, Fla. and his brother-in-law, Gordon (Nathene) Squires, of Elkhart, Ind. also survive.

A brother, Curtis E. Gore, preceded him in death.
