Dowagiac Police Department confirmed Monday it is investigating a stabbing that occurred at approximately 6 p.m. Friday, March 19, in the downtown area.

Officers were called to the 100 block of S. Front Street and found that a 13-year-old male had been stabbed once in the upper leg by another 13-year-old male.

This allegedly occurred as a result of an argument between the boys, who were known to each other.

When officers arrived on the scene they administered first aid to the victim.

During this time officers were able to speak to the large number of witnesses that observed the altercation.

The victim was taken to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

His injuries were not life-threatening.

The juvenile suspect, who fled before police arrived, was apprehended without incident about 20 minutes later at a residence about two blocks north of the occurrence.

He will be detained at a juvenile detention facility until his appearance in court. Police withheld names of the victim and suspect.
