John Wayne Preston Sr., 70, passed away peacefully at home March 6, 2010 from natural causes.

John was born Aug. 22, 1939 in Paris, Texas. His family moved to Niles, where he was raised, and went on to graduate from Niles High School. He then went on to complete a tour in the Air Force, where he was honorably discharged and moved to Detroit. He also held an associate degree from Wayne State University.

He was one of five children born to the late Fred and Burlene Preston and was the beloved husband of Mary Preston for 40 years. John worked for and retired from the State of Michigan after 25 years of service. He was a lifelong member of the Shriners and a Mason. John was known most for loving sports and having that rare quality of being able to strike up a conversation with people from all walks of life. He was one of the most charitable and giving man. He could never say no to someone in need.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Burlene; brother, Joseph; sister, Oleta; sister in-law, Ruby; and his daughter, Karla.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Mary Preston; his two daughters, Teresa Harris and Stacey Preston; and his two sons, John Jr. and Anthony; seven grandchildren, Racheal, Raymond, Candice, Darnesha, Ricco, Julian and Alexis; seven great-grandchildren, Sharay, Devonte, Lamaria, Jane, Raykwan, Sincir and Savanna; brothers, Wendell (Gwendolyn) and Fred (Marcella) both of South Bend; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family.
