Buchanan’s mayoral seat was filled Monday night during a meeting of the city commissioners.
Two former commissioners, both of whom also served as mayor for the city, had expressed interest in the commission seat left open by former mayor Barbara Clark, who died last month.

However, prior to Monday night’s meeting, Hagey withdrew his interest, according to City Clerk Gladys Bybee.

Hagey served as commissioner for the city from November 1998 to November 2008 and as mayor during 2000 to 2003.

With his application withdrawn, the commission appointed Earl J. Scanlon to the seat formerly held by Clark. According to Bybee, Scanlon will fill the vacancy through the remainder of the term, which ends in November.

The commission also voted on a new mayor.

Mayor pro tem Carla Cole was voted to serve as successor to Clark.
