ST. JOSEPH – The Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office charged Dakotah Eliason, 14, of Niles, with open murder in the death of his grandfather, Jesse Miles, 69.
Michigan State Police troopers from the Niles post were called to the Miles home, 3120 Niles-Buchanan Road, Niles Township, in the early-morning hours of Sunday, March 7.
Troopers found Miles with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Miles was transported to St. Joseph County Medical Center in South Bend, where he later died.
Dakotah was arrested at the scene and housed at the Berrien County Juvenile Center.
He was to be arraigned Monday afternoon, March 8, at Berrien County Trail Court, Niles, by video conference.
Charges have been filed under statutory provisions permitting automatic waiver into adult criminal court.
A preliminary examination was expected to be scheduled by the arraigning judge.
The penalty for open murder is either life without parole (first-degree murder) or life or any term of years (second-degree murder).
