Maria’s life began on Aug. 16, 1906, in Dolina, Austria, the daughter of Anton and Anna (Kostetski) Horbowey.

Although she was born in Austria, she was Ukrainian by nationality.

She was united in marriage to Rudolf Lorenz on Feb. 4, 1940.

She moved to Dowagiac in 1990 from Hammond, Ind.

Surviving family includes: her son, William (Linda) Lorenz of Dowagiac; grandchildren, Melina Moyer, Sonja Houle, Orrin Lorenz and Nathan Lorenz; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jaroslav, who still resides in Dolina, Western Ukraine.

Maria was very grateful to the friends and strangers who helped her through difficult periods of her life.

She lived under Russian occupation during World War I.

During World War II she first lived under Soviet occupation, then under German occupation.

She lived in Austria after WWII and came to the United States of America in 1951.
Maria passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2010, in Dowagiac.

Private graveside interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac.
