Lakeshore, St. Joseph advance to Class B district final

Arch rivals Lakeshore and St. Joseph will square off in the Class B Girls District Basketball Tournament finals on Friday night.

The Lancers eliminated Berrien Springs 50-36, while the Bears knocked off Buchanan 73-37.

The championship game will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Dowagiac Union High School.

Through the opening four minutes of the second semifinal, Buchanan was hanging tough with tournament favorite St. Joseph.

However, over the next 12 minutes, the Bears put the Bucks away and assured it of a chance to defend its district championship.

St. Joseph scored 42 points in the first half, while holding Buchanan to just 18 points.

From that point on, there was no letting up for the Bears, who outscored the Bucks 30-19 in the final two quarters.

Alesya Schalk did most of the damage in second quarter when St. Joseph erupted for 25 points.

Schalk came off the bench, hit a trio of 3-pointers and scored 11 of her 17 points in the period.

The Bears also got 17 points from Erika Priebe, who also scored 11 first half points. Lindsay Peirce and Kaitlin Mavis both finished with 10 points.

Elizabeth Hein paced the Bucks with eight points. Julie LaBounty added seven and Erin Glavin six.

Despite a 20-point effort from the Shamrocks’ Koby Gillespie, Berrien Springs was unable to upset the Lancers in the opening semifinal Wednesday night.

Lakeshore was able to open up leads at the beginning of each of the first three quarters before Berrien Springs would fight back to make a game of it.

But in the final quarter, Lakeshore built a lead and then kept the Shamrocks from making that run and cruised home with a 14-point victory.

Lakeshore led 14-12 after one period and 21-18 at the intermission. Berrien Springs cut the lead to 34-32 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The Lancers outscored the Shamrocks 16-4 in the fourth quarter to earn a trip to the finals.

Kaitlin Cornwell led Lakeshore with 16 points, while Taylor Maas added 10 and Cam Tyler nine.

Amanda Bromilow had 10 points for the Shamrocks.
