KALAMAZOO – The school record 15-game winning streak of the Brandywine girls’ basketball team came to an end Monday night at the hands of Class A Kalamazoo Central.

The Bobcats (15-1) stood toe-to-toe with the Maroon Giants before falling 58-54.
Brandywine, ranked No. 4 in Class C led through the first three quarters before Kalamazoo Central rallied for the victory.

The Bobcats led 14-8 after one quarter of play and 29-23 at the intermission.

Brandywine led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter.

The Maroon Giants (5-12) cut the lead to 41-38 heading to the fourth quarter and then outscored the Bobcats 20-13 to pull out the victory.

Carlie Newman led all scorers with a game-high 30 points and Morgan Smallwood added 12.

Vanessa Edwards led Kalamazoo Central with 18 points. Also reaching double figures for the Giants were Katie Gibbs with 13, Tyra Carver and Candice Johnson 10.

Free throws down the stretch were the Bobcats’ downfall as they hit just 4-of-15 in the fourth quarter and 12-of-24 for the game.

“We need to find a way to knock down free throws when it counts,” Brandywine coach Josh Hood said. “But this was a good test for us and a good learning experience.”
