No one at the Big 16 Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday had an answer for the Lakeshore Lancers.

Lakeshore, which won the team tournament back in January, rolled to the individual format championship as well.

The Lancers landed nine in the championship finals and collected six individual championships as they rolled up 242 points.

Portage Central, which had two individual champions, finished second with 242 points.

Battle Creek Lakeview finished third with 110 points and Battle Creek Harper Creek fourth with 92.

Host Niles rounded out the top five with 90 points.

The Vikings had a pair of individual champions.

Senior Gage Pearison won his first Big 16 title on Saturday as he pinned St. Joseph’s Matt Huff in 2:43 of the 119-pound championship match.

Colin Burandt, a junior, followed that up with his first championship at 125-pounds.

Burandt defeated Mike Gancer of Battle Creek Harper Creek 7-6.

“We had two first time champions and that was great for both of them,” Niles coach Todd Hesson said. “They wrestled well and beat some kids who beat them earlier in the year.”

Niles also got top six places out of Fritz Findiesen and Mike Gentry.

The Vikings will open up the MHSAA state tournament on Thursday when it travels to Stevensville to face the No. 2 ranked Lakeshore Lancers in the first round of the team districts.

Wrestling will begin at 6 p.m.
