Dowagiac Department of Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson reports that on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 2:19 a.m., officers arrested a 39-year-old Bridgman male after a vehicle pursuit which started in the city and concluded in Cass County’s Silver Creek Township.
Pursuit ended when the intoxicated subject slid his minivan into a tree.
Pursuit began after a Dowagiac police officer attempted to stop the subject near Main and Parsonage streets for driving without headlights. The driver did not pull over. A vehicle pursuit ensued.
The chase went for several blocks in Dowagiac before proceeding west into Silver Creek Township, where the suspect slid into a tree on Garrett Road.
The driver then fled from the Dowagiac officers on foot into a wooded area, where he was apprehended after a short distance. The driver was determined to be intoxicated and on parole for fleeing and eluding in Michigan. The driver was lodged at the Cass County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding, operating while intoxicated, no operator’s license and possession of marijuana. Police withheld his name until his arraignment in Cass County Fourth District Court. The report will be forwarded to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
