Dowagiac Department of Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson reports his department handled a traffic crash that occurred at 11:48 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, on Spruce Street, near Maple, in the city.

The accident, resulting in no injuries, involved a single-passenger pickup truck.

The truck ran off the roadway and struck a tree and telephone pole on Spruce Street, causing the driver to then lose control and cross back across Spruce.

The truck then ran into and entered the closed Jackson Hewitt tax business at 701 Spruce St.

The truck struck the north side of the business and proceeded through the north wall before coming to a stop inside of the business, causing significant damage to the truck and business.

The driver, a 56-year-old male, was found to be intoxicated.

The driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated and lodged at the Cass County Jail after he failed sobriety tests.

Police withheld the driver’s name until his arraignment in Cass County Fourth District Court.

The police report was forwarded to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
