Scott Novak: The coaches have spoken

novakTo say the least, I was shocked that the American Football Coaches Association’s poll on the Bowl Championship Series showed that 73 percent of the 120 Division I-A mentors liked the current system.

On the other hand, a Quinnipiac poll last month showed that 63 percent of the people want to rid college football of this system.

So who is right?

I guess if the coaches are okay with the system then it should stay.

Personally I think it’s a bunch of garbage.

The story came from the Orlando Sentinel and several coaches were quoted.

It wasn’t much of a surprise to see Ohio State’s Jim Tressel speak in favor of the system, after all, his team has played in three of the BCS title games.

Tressel did say that he would expect to see improvements in the system somewhere down the road, but he also noted that he wouldn’t want to see college football start over with a different system.

I say blow it all up! It’s a shame and until it allows all teams the opportunity to have a shot at playing in a BCS bowl game I will always feel that way.

What shocked me the most is that TCU’s Gary Patterson and Boise State’s Chris Petersen were also in favor of keeping the system.

One would think that those two coaches would be very vocal in that they were both kept out of the national title game despite being undefeated.

Patterson did make an interesting point in his comments, which was that no one can be sure that things would work out any better for his team if there was a playoff system in place.

I would have to agree with that statement, but I would offer up that at least teams would have a chance on the field to decide their fate.

I guess one of my biggest problem with the BCS system is that things are decided in back rooms and by computer geeks instead of football players on a field.

Oregon State coach Mike Riley pointed out that he loves the college bowl system because it awards teams for having a successful season.

I would also keep the bowl system, but let’s face it folks, there are just too many of them.

Teams should be rewarded for having a great season. Right now in order to fill all the bowl spots, teams are being rewarded for having mediocre seasons.

Eventually we will get this right.

What we don’t need, and the Quinnipiac poll agrees, is Congress getting involved.
There is no need for the government to worry about this college football problem.
They have enough to worry about in Washington.

Besides, with the way things stand right now, it makes for great water cooler talk at the office.
