Lena Mae Green

Lena Mae Green, 90, of Berrien Springs died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2010 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Lena was born February 28, 1919 in New Castle, Texas, the daughter of Columbus and Lena (Satterwhite) Harris. She married Mac Green on May 1, 1943 in Elkhart, Ind., and he preceded her in death in October 1982. In addition to raising a family, Lena worked at Simplicity Pattern Co., retiring after 21 years of service.

Lena had a gift to gab, and she loved her friends. Her close friends – Marguerite, Fran, Eleanor and so many others – brought so much joy just being there. She was a member of the Central County Center for Senior Citizens. Lena resided at Jordan’s Life Care Center, which she called home even though she was there only a short time.

Lena cherished her family, and she always loved to hug her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a fighter who never gave up, and she was loved by her family and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her children, Charlotte (Jim) Kilgore of Buchanan, E. Diane (Jim) Koebel of Baroda, Donald (Dorothy) Green of Cheboygan, Mich. and Douglas (Delila) Green of Wasilla, Alaska; nine grandchildren–Bill Koebel of Stevensville, Jill (Rob) Ludwick of Granger, Ind., Scott (Katie) Kilgore of Everett, Wash., Brian (Shelley) Kilgore of Niles, Douglas (Tara) Green II; step-granddaughters, Carmel Sergio and Martha Nacario all of Wasilla, Dennis (Kim) Green of Manistique, Mich. and Jennifer (Bryan) Sachtleben of Cheboygan; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle and Michael Koebel and R. Beau Ludwick of Indiana, Drew, Alex, and Lauren Kilgore of Michigan, Liam Kilgore of Washington, Rachel and Mary Green of Alaska, Khara, Mitchell, Macy and Quinton Green and Mya Sachtleben, all of Michigan; and one brother, Edmund Harris of Elkhart.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Dennis, who died in infancy; a grandson, Jason Green in 1984; her twin brother, C. J. Harris in 2004, and her brother, Raymond in 2006.

Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, Jan. 11 at the Berrien Springs United Methodist Church, where friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 a.m. until service time. The Rev. Cindy Parsons will officiate, and private graveside services will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Berrien Springs United Methodist Church, where Lena was a member.
