Matt Severin: Sister Lakes Student Council wins Michigan Apple Contest

Published 12:47 pm Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Each year Sister Lakes Student Council makes purchases for Sister Lakes Elementary School by sponsoring popcorn sales, school shirt sales and a school supply store.

Last year’s students, with the guidance of Student Council advisors Rachel Kyncl and Kimberly Montgomery, voted on some different goals and decided that school beautification would be their top priority.

You can imagine their excitement when Sister Lakes Elementary Student Council won $3,000 from the Michigan Apple Committee Sweepstakes last spring.

Sister Lakes’ students, families, staff and community members collected Michigan apple labels to be submitted for this contest.

The more labels collected, the greater the chance of winning.

We had a huge response!

So far, a new welcome mat has been purchased for the entrance to the building.

This mat adds to the front of the building and is helping to promote school spirit.

It serves as a visual reminder of the great community and family involvement in our building.

A new bench has also been purchased with these funds.

The goal is to add some color to the front of the building and give students and parents a nice place to visit and relax before and after school.

The bench has been personalized with “Sister Lakes Elementary,” thus promoting school spirit.

With the remaining balance of the prize, the Sister Lakes Student Council is looking into other purchases that will further add to the personality of our amazing school community!

Sister Lakes is entering the contest again this year and would appreciate any donations of Michigan apple bags.

Please drop them off in the front office.
