James Stephen 'Steve' Schuyler

James Stephen “Steve” Schuyler, 68, of East Main Street, Niles died at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009 at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis of complications from a series of surgeries.

Steve was born March 19, 1941 in Niles to the late Cornelius P. “Buck” and Jeanne E. (Kettles) Schuyler. He was a lifetime resident of Niles and 1959 graduate of Niles High School. He later graduated from Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac.

James was an active member of the B.P.O. of Niles Elks Lodge 1322. He spent many hours of enjoyment creating Web pages, especially for the Niles Class of 1959. He was a professional archer, winning many tournaments. Even in the first Apple Festival he played “Johnny Appleseed” and shot an apple off the head of the Apple Festival chairman.

He loved his family very much; they were his life and will be dearly missed.

On July 22, 1961 in Niles, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Sandra “Sandy” Schneck, who survives.

Also surviving are his daughter, Shelley (Schuyler) Klug of Edwardsburg; son, Stephen (Christina) Schuyler of Lakevilla, Ill.; grandchildren, Joshua Krassow of Edwardsburg, Nicole (Sean) Phillips of Niles, Gabriella and Gianna Schuyler of Lakevilla; great-granddaughters, Cadence and Londyn Phillips of Niles.

Steve is also survived by a brother, David Schuyler of Gulfport, Miss.; sister-in-law, Patricia Wojtkowski of Edwardsburg; nieces, Stacie Schuyler Kuper of Tulsa, Okla., Cassie Schulyer of Nashville, Barb Erickson of Niles and Deb Williams of Edwardsburg.

In memory of Steve’s life, there will be a Celebration of Life held at the B.P.O. of Niles Elks Lodge 1322 at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009.

Arrangements were made by Halbritter Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the Michigan Commission for the Blind.
