Bernice E. Kozlowski, 80, of West Peninsula Drive, Shavehead Lake, Cassopolis died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009 at Lakeland Medical Center, Niles after an extended illness.
She was born May 31, 1929 in Chicago to the late Herbert and Esther (Lutz) Patz Sr. and moved to this area in 1969 from Chicago. She married John R. Kozlowski Sr. Jan. 9, 1958 in Chicago.
Bernice was a retired meat-packer with the former ESI Meats in Bristol, Ind. and also was a sorter with Pioneer Seed Co. in Constantine, Mich. She attended St. Ann Catholic Church in Cassopolis. Bernice enjoyed playing bingo and going to casinos. She was a member of Three Rivers Eagles Aerie 23033. Bernice was known as a people person and loved spending time with family and friends.
Bernice is survived by her husband, John; a son, James M. (Debra) Kozlowski of Cassopolis; three step-grandchildren, Brad Prince, Amy Bateson and Chad Prince; two step-great-grandchildren, Chelsi Bateson and Mariah Bateson; a sister, Marie Uher of Oak Brook Terrace, Ill.; two brothers, Theodore Patz of Gardner, Kan. and Jerry Patz of Tiskilwa, Ill.
She was preceded in death by a son, John R. “Jay” Kozlowski, on Oct. 10, 1990; a brother, Herbert Patz Jr.; and two sisters, Rose Harper and Madelyn San Filippo.
A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 421 Broadway N., Cassopolis with Fr. Donald G. Potts officiating.
Internment was held in Shavehead Cemetery, Porter Township, Cass County.
The family received friends Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Connelly Funeral Home, Cassopolis, where a prayer was held at 7:30 p.m.
