Eleanor M. Califf, 94, of South Third Street in Niles, died at 1:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 2009 at Silverbrook Manor in Niles following an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 19, 1914 in Chicago to Albert Irving and Mathilda (Essig) Irving. She attended schools in Chicago and lived in Florida for many years before coming to Niles in 1999. She married Lyle H. Califf on Sept. 29, 1934 in Centerville, Mich. He died Dec. 23, 1992.
She was a member of First Church of god in Niles and Bayside Church of God in Safety Harbor in Florida. She belonged to the Merry Widows Support Group and was active in the Super-Sixties senior social group at the Baptist Church in Clearwater, Fla.
Eleanor is survived by a son, Richard L. (Sally Clevenger) Califf of Niles; daughter, Marlene (Jimmy) Sebasty of Buchanan; brother, Eugene Irving of Ojal, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; son, Dean Califf, who died Jan. 27, 1950; daughter-in-law, Liz Califf.
The family will gather at a later date. Burial will be held at Prairie River Cemetery in Centerville, Mich.
There will be no visitation. Arrangements were made by Halbritter Funeral Home of Niles.
Memorials may be made to First Church of God in Niles.
