Edwardsburg boys win season opener; girls fall to St. Joseph

WHITE PIGEON – Nick Muer scored 19 points and Kyle Dale added 12 as the Edwardsburg boys’ basketball team defeated host White Pigeon in its season opener Tuesday night 54-52.

Josh Kozinski added 11 points for the Eddies (1-0).

Tanner Nichols had 16 point for the Chiefs and Ryan Shoesmith finished with 11.

Edwardsburg will travel to Cassopolis on Friday night to open up Lakeland Conference play against its arch rival.

EDWARDSBURG – Visiting St. Joseph outscored Edwardsburg 14-5 in the fourth quarter en route to a 49-44 non-conference girls’ varsity basketball victory Tuesday night.

The Eddies (2-1) took a 39-35 lead into the final quarter, but couldn’t maintain the advantage.

After grabbing a 9-8 lead after one period of play, Edwardsburg stretched its advantage to 27-20 at the intermission.

St. Joseph outscored the Eddies 15-12 in the third quarter to cut the lead to four points.
The Bears held a 29-17 advantage in scoring the second half.

Erika Priebe led all scorers with 17 points for St. Joseph, which also got 15 points from Kaitlin Mavis.

The Eddies were led by Ashley Streb’s 13 points.

Rachel Vite added 12 points and Mariah Murphy eight. Vite also had 11 rebounds and Murphy four assists.

Emily Kozinski, who was held to five points, grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds. Steffany Streb chipped in with three points and seven assists.

Edwardsburg will make the short trip across Cass County to take on arch rival Cassopolis on Thursday night.
