Shirley Ann Hood, 72, of South Third Street, Niles, died at 7:16 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles, following a brief illness.
She was born July 9, 1937 in New Carlisle, Ind. to Alice Flowers Miller. She attended South Bend schools and lived in Greenville, S.C., returning in 2008. She first married Richard Shafer on Sept. 21, 1957 in South Bend. She later married Larry Hood.
She attended Washington Avenue Baptist Church in Greenville. Shirley enjoyed riding Harley motorcycles and watching television. She loved animals, especially her dogs and cats.
She is survived by her sons, William Milcherska, of Niles, and Anthony Milcherska, of Baton Rouge, La.; daughter, Alma Boker, of Niles; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; foster sisters, Patricia Lawson, of Niles, Linda Sadler, of Niles; foster brothers, Norman Milcherska Sr., of South Bend, and Leon P. Milcherska Jr., of South Bend.
She is preceded in death by her foster parents, Velma Marie and Leon Pal Milcherska Sr., and sister, Barbara Miller.
The family will be gathering privately for services with Pastor Jim Wing of First Baptist Church.
There will be no visitation. Arrangements were made by Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
