BUCHANAN – In a early season Lakeland Conference girls’ basketball clash it was the visiting Edwardsburg Eddies pull out a 51-45 overtime win against Buchanan Friday evening.

The win was the first against the Lady Bucks by the Eddies since the 2006-2007 season when Friday night’s high scorer, senior Steffany Streb, was a freshman.

Streb led her team with 18 points, 10 coming from the free throw line, and the Eddies sinking eight of their 12 overtime points from the charity line.

As a team they hit 17-of-29 on their way to handing the Lady Bucks their second loss in as many games.

“This shows that we are heading in the right direction,” Eddie coach Nicole Cartwright said following the win. “We worked hard all off season to get where we are at.”

Buchanan trailed by four at the half 24-20 and after a low scoring third and the Lady Bucks trailing by three Edwardsburg opened up a eight point lead early in the fourth.

It wasn’t until late in the quarter that the Bucks found the bottom of the net from long range knocking down a trio of 3-point buckets to cut the lead to two with 1:40 to play.

Elizabeth Hein hit a pair of free throws with :46 to play to knot the game at 39. The Lady Bucks had one more attempt at the win but never got the shot off sending the game into overtime.

“At the end of regulation we were looking to get the ball to Liz,” Buchanan coach David Cleveland said of the teams last shot at the end of regulation. “Liz was taking it pretty strong to the basket and nobody was stopping her and she has been hitting her free throws. That was our option, she got stopped and then we were looking to kick it to somebody to knock down a shot and we didn’t get the shot.”

The Eddies took control in the overtime period to lock down the win outscoring Buchanan 8-2 in the first three minutes of the extra period.
Chelsea Adolph led Buchanan with 11 points and Julia LaBounty tallied nine. Rachel Vite finished the game with 13 and Sarah D’Amico added 12 for the Eddies.

Buchanan will host Coloma next Wednesday as the Lady Bucks look to even their league record against the Comets.
