Middlebury man drowns in Baldwin Lake

Cass County Sheriff Joseph M, Underwood Jr. is reporting a drowning on Baldwin Lake in Porter Township.

Deputies on scene reported that Larry Bontrager, 59, from Middlebury, Ind., was at a lake cottage on Baldwin Lake. Bontrager went fishing around 11:30 a.m. and had not returned home. He was found in the water near his boat around 3:15 p.m. Nov. 28.

He was taken to Elkhart General Hospital by the Porter Township Ambulance. Once at the hospital he was pronounced dead. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Porter Township Ambulance, Porter Township Fire Department and the Michigan State Police.

Bontrager was not wearing a life jacket and the incident remains under investigation at this time. John White from the Elkhart County Corners Office is assisting with the investigation.
