Middlebury man drowns in Baldwin LakePublished 9:59am Monday, November 30, 2009
CASSOPOLIS – Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports a drowning on Baldwin Lake in Porter Township.
Deputies on the scene reported that a Larry Bontrager, 59, from Middlebury, Ind., was at a lake cottage on Baldwin Lake.
Mr. Bontrager went fishing around 11:30 a.m. and had not returned home.
He was found in the water near his boat around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28.
He was taken to Elkhart, Ind., General Hospital by Porter Township ambulance.
Once at the hospital he was pronounced dead.
Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Porter Township ambulance, Porter Township Fire Department and the Michigan State Police.
Mr. Bontrager was not wearing a life jacket.
The incident remains under investigation.
John White from the Elkhart County Coroner’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
