Dowagiac’s Proshwitz advances to state cross finals

PORTAGE – The Buchanan girls’ cross country team finished fourth at the Division 3 Michigan High School Athletic Association Regional Cross Country meet held at Portage Middle School on Saturday.

The Lady Bucks placed second last season.

Buchanan’s Torrie Eger led the Lady Bucks with a third place finish and a time of 20:20.7. Stephanie Reith also qualified for the state finals after finishing 15th. She was clocked at 21:24.1.

Schoolcraft won the team championship with 52 points, while Berrien Springs was second. Dowagiac placed 15th and Brandywine did not have enough girls to post a team score.

In the Division 3 boys meet, Kalamazoo Hackett won with 79 points and Bangor was second. Buchanan placed seventh and Dowagiac 11th.

The Chieftains and Bucks each had a runner advance to the state meet next week at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Dowagiac’s Kasey Proshwitz finished 12th with a time of 17:36.3, while Buchanan’s Carsten McCarty was 24th with a time of 18:25.9.

Brandywine did not field a full team.

Niles finished eighth and Edwardsburg 12th in the Division 2 regional meet.

Vicksburg was the overall winner with St. Joseph finishing second.

The Vikings’ Mark Calhoun finished fifth (16:31.3) and Sam VandenHeede 21st (17:08.8) to advance to the state meet.

Edwardsburg’s Josh Clark placed eighth (16:42.4) to advance as well.

The Lady Vikings took 10th place in the girls’ race, which was won by Hamilton. Otsego finished second.

Niles’ Madie Rodts placed 10th with a time of 19:40.7 to earn the lone spot in the finals for the Lady Vikings.

Edwardsburg finished 16th and did not have a runner advance.
