A fire at the Peking Dragon restaurant in Niles Tuesday evening resulted in minimal damage before the flames reached the attic.
According to Niles Fire Chief Larry Lamb, the dispatch received a call shortly before 5 p.m. of a fire at the restaurant, located at the corner of 11th and Maple streets.
Firefighters from Howard, Clay and Bertrand townships were called to the scene, where a fire was ignited in a wok and was climbing the hood. Lamb said the fire was contained before the flames reached the attic area.
“We are fortunate it held and did not continue,” Lamb said. “We’re pretty lucky.”
Firefighters stayed on the scene to monitor for rekindling flames.
The state health department was notified of the fire. Lamb said the building sustained minimal smoke damage; the hood will likely have to be replaced.
The owners, whose names were not available, refused comment.
