Canadians crash in Milton Township

CASSOPOLIS – Sheriff Joseph Underwood Jr. reported Friday that deputies responded to a personal-injury traffic crash on U.S. 12 and Five Points Road in Mason Township.
The crash occurred Oct. 16 at 7:20 a.m.

Investigation showed the crash occurred due to a vehicle driven by Melis Melissen, 66, of British Columbia, Canada, that entered the intersection from a stop sign and failed to yield right of way to a westbound vehicle driven by Rebecca Palmer, 44, of Edwardsburg.

Palmer and the passenger in Melissen’s vehicle, Maartje Melissen, 66, of British Columbia, were transported to Elkhart, Ind., General Hospital by Porter Area Ambulance and Oslo Ambulance Service.

Assisting the sheriff’s office on the scene was the Porter Area Fire Department.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. All occupants were wearing seatbelts, deputies reported.

Tree struck in Silver Creek Township


CASSOPOLIS – Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports his office is investigating a personal-injury crash that occurred Friday, Oct. 16, at 6:25 p.m. on Indian Lake Road in Silver Creek Township.

Shaun Harrington, 19, of Cassopolis, was southbound on Indian Lake Road when, for an unknown reason, lost control of his vehicle and traveled off the side of the road, colliding with a tree.

He and Audreanna Gordy, 19, of Watervliet, were transported by Coloma ambulance to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac.

Sister Lakes ambulance transported the two uninjured 6- month-old children, Arionna and Alexander Gordy.

Alcohol is not a factor and safety restraints were used.

This case is still under investigation.

Assisting were Indian Lake Fire Department, Coloma ambulance and Sister Lakes.
