For the first 10 points of each set Thursday night, the Dowagiac varsity volleyball team was as good as visiting Otsego.

Unfortunately for the Chieftains, sets are played to 25 points.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs were able to withstand the opening few points of each set and came away with a 3-0 Wolverine Conference victory over Dowagiac.

“I looked back in our book when I got home and we won the battle to 10 each game,” Dowagiac coach Ryan Frontczak said. “I was really happy with how we started today. That is a really good team. We really battled the entire night with them. We did so many things good.

“We just need to make them great now to beat this caliber of team. I am very proud of our girls not giving up. I really thought we had girls step up tonight. We just need to work on our finishing ability,” he added.

Dowagiac was led offensively by Alyssa Greenwood, who finished the night with eight kills.

The Chieftains also got four kills from Kaisha Martin and three kills each from Andrea Bradshaw and Kiele Belew.

Bradshaw also had four blocks.

Danielle Taylor and Meghan Hojara finished with 14 and six assists respectively.

On defense, Devon Ownby finished with seven digs.

BUCHANAN – The Buchanan varsity volleyball team defeated visiting Kalamazoo Central in a five set thriller Thursday night.

The Lady Bucks defeated the Lady Maroon Giants 25-23, 25-19, 25-27, 22-25 and 15-12.

“I’ve been waiting all season for this team to play with confidence and fight back when their backs are to the wall… and tonight finally it all came together,” Buchanan coach Lisa Holok said.

“We played as a team… had some amazing defense and our blocking really picked it up through out the match. Its always nice to win on senior night… emotions are running high but we kept it under control even after dropping games three and four.

“This is the time of year to kick it up a notch and I felt like as a team… we did just that. Congrats to my seniors they deserved it.”
