DMS eighth grade squad tops St. Joe UptonPublished 9:10am Friday, October 2, 2009
The Dowagiac Middle School eighth grade football team posted a 6-2 win over the Bears.
Shane Bevins led the Chieftains with 55 yards, while Davion Highsmith caught three passes for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Nate Lindsey led a late charge as with 1:36 remaining on the clock, he drove the Chieftains down the field for the game-winning touchdown.
Lindsey was 4-of-4 for 60 yards.
Other key offensive players were Jesse Mast and Aaron Adams.
On defense, Dowagiac made a pair of goal line stands.
Defensive leaders for the Chieftains were Bevins and Travis Edwards. Also singled out on defense were Ray Vega, Carl Grand and Gilbert Lopez.
“Defensively, the Chieftains continue to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with,” Dowagiac coach Chad Perrin said. “The defense has only allowed one touchdown all season and proved themselves again last night by making two goal line stands.”
Seventh grade football
The seventh grade dropped a 34-14 decision to the Bears on Wednesday.
Top players for the Chieftains were Jason Presley Collins with 185yards and one touchdown and Rolando Lico with 146 and one touchdown.
“The whole team played very hard,” coach Steve Juroff said. “But will try to bounce back next week.”
Eighth grade volleyball
The Dowagiac Middle School eighth grade volleyball teams fell to the Lakeshore Lancers on Thursday night.
The Orange squad lost a close match 25-21, 22-25 and 8-15.
All the girls served well and Mackenzie Ruff played well at the net with one kill.
The Black squad lost 12-25, 16-25 and 4-15.
Brianna McCuddy was strong blocking along with Julia Ferrier. Ferrier and Christina Preston controlled the back row with aggressive digs.
