For the second straight week the Dowagiac football team ground out a victory against a Wolverine Conference opponent.
After rushing for more than 570 yards last week, the Chieftains backed it up Friday night at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field with 497 yards on the ground in a 47-12 victory.
“The kids are doing a good job,” Dowagiac coach Mike Stanger said. “We are mixing up the offensive line quite a bit. We are rotating serveral players at guard. Our backfield is a talented backfield. They all play defense, so we are rotating them as well because defense is our first priority.”
The win moved Dowagiac within three wins of qualifying for the postseason for a fourth consecutive season and it kept the Chieftains just a game behind league-leading Three Rivers, which defeated Otsego Friday night in a battle of first place squads.
Brandon Douglas had another big game running the football as the senior ran for 224 yards on just nine carries and two touchdowns. Douglas, who scored on runs of 31- and 22- yards, averaged 24.9 yards per carry.
Anthony Nelson added 111 yards on 10 totes and scored a touchdown, while Jon Myers scored twice and rushed for 93 yards on 10 carries.
Myers’ two touchdowns came off of mistakes – one by Dowagiac and the other created by the Chieftains.
Myers’ first touchdown came on a 3-yard run when he scooped up a fumble early in the second quarter to give Dowagiac a 13-6 advantage. His second touchdown came when he recovered a blocked punt by the Chieftains in the third quarter.
Nelson opened the scoring for the Chieftains with a 4-yard touchdown run. Dowagiac, without its regular placekicker due to an injury, had the extra point attempt blocked.
Douglas’ first touchdown extended Dowagiac’s lead to 13-0 as he raced 31-yards. Kyle Wright’s kick was good and the Chieftains were off and running.
Dowagiac led 33-0 at halftime.
Also scoring in the first half was Steven Baylock on a 4-yard run and Douglas on a 22-yard run.
In the second half the Chieftains got the Myers touchdown as well as a 9-yard run by Troy Butcher.
Comstock’s two scores came on a 55-yard pass from Chad Griswold to Ryan Vrooman. Vrooman also scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Dowagiac finished with 512 yards in total offense. The Chieftains were just 2-of-9 for 15 yards in the passing department.
Tight end Destine Payne caught both passes from Mike Pranschke.
Comstock finished with 194 yards in total offense, of which 108 came on the ground and 88 through the air.
The Colts were 4-of-17 throwing the football with two interceptions.
