Niles wins own doubles invitational crown

The Niles tennis team captured its own invitational tournament championship on Saturday by winning the Varsity Doubles Tournament.

The event was staged at both Niles High School and Plym Park.

The Vikings finished with 13 points to edge runner-up Edwardsburg, which finished with 11 points.

Brandywine was third with seven points and Coloma fourth with five points.

Winning flight championships for the Vikings were Chris and Alex Lewellen at No. 3, Colin Leonard and Danny Touhey at No. 4, Mitch Peterek and Chad Majerek at No. 5 and Travis Lemanski and Patrick Schrader at No. 6.

The all doubles tournament paired the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players for the first flights and the No. 2 and No. 4 singles players for the second flight.

The team’s normal doubles teams then played flights three through six.

Earning a second place finish were Brandywine’s Tyler Weeks and Cody Udell at No. 3 and Dan and Blank and Nick Wright at No.6.

Edwardsburg’s Cody Pletcher and Cameron Breisch were the first flight champions.
Taking second for the Eddies were Anthony Dopp and Hunter Woods at No. 2 doubles, Lucas Devenny and Nick Mortimer at No. 4 doubles, along with Dillian Kujawa and Mitch Patzer at No. five doubles.

Coloma earned a first place at No. 2 doubles with the team of Tyler Dye and Patrick Fowler.
The Comets’
Nathan Conrad and Shawn Collins were runners-up at No. 1 doubles.
Niles returns to the court today as it hosts Lakeshore in a Big 16 Conference West Division match.
