Niles’ Madie Rodts takes title at Dowagiac Rotary Invitational

DOWAGIAC – Senior Madie Rodts of Niles edged Ann Marie Arseneau of Sturgis to win the girls’ junior-senior race at the Dowagiac Rotary Invitational on Saturday.

Rodts caught Arseneau at the two-mile mark and then held her off, winning by seven seconds.

Rodts ran a time of 19:29 to help the Lady Vikings finish second in the final team standings.

Arseneau ran 19:33 as the Lady Trojans captured the team championship.

The invitational was divided into four races – two each for freshmen and sophomores and juniors and seniors.

Sturgis had 17 points to take the team title, while Niles finished with 27 points. Berrien Springs finished third with 36 points. Brandywine took seventh and Dowagiac eighth.

Niles’ Alex Haimbaugh was eighth overall with a time of 22:32.

In the freshmen-sophomore race, the Lady Vikings’ Anne Tyler placed sixth with a time of 22:05.

Sturgis also won the boys’ title with 18 points. Plainwell was second with 20. Dowagiac finished seventh. Niles and Brandywine did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.

The Vikings’ Mark Calhoun was second in the junior-senior race with a time of 16:45. Plainwell’s Morgan Timiney was the overall winner with a clocking of 16:36.

Niles’ Sam VandenHeede was third in the freshmen-sophomore race with a time of 17:44.
