An incomplete pass from Edwardsburg quarterback Frank Majors ended a late fourth quarter drive that dashed any hopes of an Eddies’ victory over visiting Hopkins.
The Vikings outlasted the Eddies 25-20 in the 2009 high school football season opener for both teams.
“It was a good football game, the teams battled. I was pleased with what our kids did defensively, we were physical.” Edwardsburg coach Kevin Bartz said. “Last season it was what 44-6?, so we made a big improvement from last year. I think as a coach, I’ve got confidence that we can play with anyone. Hopkins is a quality football program.”
On the Vikings’ first possession, a 1-and-15 from the 29-yard line, Benjamin Bregg busted loose for a 76-yard touchdown run to put the visitors up 7-0.
Bregg scored a total of four times including touchdown runs of 4, 56, and 27 yards, behind 23 rushed for 225 yards.
Edwardsburg (0-1) marched right down the field after the Hopkins score on an eight-play 65-yard drive, capped off by an Adam Kendall 32-yard run to pay dirt. Quarterback Frank Majors found Kyle Dale for the two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead, which the Eddies took into the half.
Right out of the break, on the Eddies third play, Austin Stinnett rumbled for a 32-yard touchdown to put the Eddies up 14-7.
A fumbled punt by Edwardsburg gave the Vikings another scoring chance.
“I thought our mistakes were more crucial with turnovers in big situations. The first half we shot ourselves in the foot and put ourselves in bad situations. I would have liked to have been up another touchdown at halftime.” Bartz said.
Bregg scored two more times to put the Vikings up 19-14 late in the third quarter.
After each team had another possession, the Eddies got the ball with nine minutes remaining in the game.
Facing a fourth-and four from the 13-yard line, Stinnett made a huge five-yard first-down run to keep the drive alive. On a first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Stinnett found the end zone to give the Eddies a 20-19 lead with 3:16 remaining in the game.
Bregg was not finished, with 39 seconds remaining; he shot through the middle untouched for the game winner.
But the Eddies had one last drive in them. They quickly moved down field aided by a Vikings facemask penalty to set up shop at the 15-yard line.
With four seconds remaining, Majors tried to hit Kendall, but a Hopkins defender knocked the pass out of the way to seal the victory.
Stinnett led the Eddies with 13 carries for 92 yards. Devin Bywaters carried the ball for 56-yards.
Frank Majors was 4-for-8 for 81 yards.
Kyle Dale caught all four of Major’s aerials for 81-yards.
“We got a lot of positives out of it. We’ve got a good football team.” Bartz concluded.
