The Dowagiac junior varsity and freshmen football teams defeated visiting Three Rivers Wednesday night at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field 46-21 and 28-20 respectively.
Dowagiac coach Matt Alward said the offensive line of Joe Badner, Dontrell Tucker, Kyle Dufour, Jacob Brom, Chris Krawczyk, Matt Dodd and Eric Charles, the Chieftains were able to run successfully through the line as well as throw the football.
Charles had four receptions for 45 yards.
Dowagiac got touchdown runs from Brendon Murray, Derek Stark and Todd McIntyre as it edged the Wildcats.
Murray finished with 103 yards on eight carries, while Stark had 86 yards on eight totes and McIntyre 45 yards on eight carries.
Brett Scanlon was 4-of-4 on extra point kicks.
Cal Cox led the defense with a 45-yard scoop and score touchdown, while Scanlon picked off a pass with nine seconds remaining to seal the victory.
“We got off to a fast start, but Three Rivers was a very talented team adn they made it close late,” Dowagiac coach Tony Scacia said. “I was really proud of our kids for sticking together, especially our defense, which sealed the win on the last series of the game.”
