Cassopolis volleyball team winless in season opener

CASSOPOLIS – The Cassopolis varsity volleyball team went winless on the day at its own invitational on Saturday.

The Lady Rangers fell to Climax-Scotts (25-14, 25-23), New Buffalo (25-19, 25-21) and to Eau Claire (25-14, 25-24).

Climax-Scott and Michigan Lutheran both went 6-0 in pool play.

In the quarterfinals, Cassopolis was defeated by Michigan Lutheran 25-21 and 25-10, while Climax-Scotts defeated Benton Harbor 25-5 and 25-10 to advance to the semifinals.

Michigan Lutheran then defeated New Buffalo 25-18, 25-23 and Climax-Scotts defeated Eau Claire 25-9, 20-25 and 15-7 in the semis.

Michigan Lutheran took home the hardware as it defeated Climax-Scotts 17-25, 25-16 and 17-15 in the championship match.

Emily Hartsell and Jessica Biek led the team in aces with 10 each.

Olivia Stewart had 92 assists, while Biek finished with 13 kills and Kristen Fitzsimons had eight blocks.

“The Lady Rangers played as well as a team, first-year coach Brooke Borsa said. “They showed cohesiveness and strived to improve throughout the day. Each game the Rangers played, showed improvement from the last. The first tournament was definitely a learning experience for me as a coach and I was able to see what we need to work on as a team.
