Chieftain soccer team blanked by Lakeshore in opener

STEVENSVILLE – The Dowagiac varsity soccer team opened up its 2009 season with a 3-0 setback at the hands of host Lakeshore Monday night.
The match was as scoreless tie at halftime.
Lakeshore, which outshot Dowagiac 19-7 in the non-conference match, scored three times in the final 40 minutes to pull out the victory.
Ian Armstrong opened the scoring in the 48th minute, while he tallied again in the 60th minute to make it a 2-0 contest.
The Lancer completed the scoring in the 70th minute as Justin Brown scored on a penalty kick.
“Despite the loss the boys played well against a very deep Lakeshore team,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “In the second half Lakeshore took advantage of our lack of subs due to injuries and capitalized on our minor mistakes. Jason Turner did a nice job in goal having 15 saves in his first varsity soccer game.”
