Buchanan sweeps doubles to win own invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – By sweeping the four doubles flights, the host Buchanan Bucks were able to fend off Three Rivers in their season opener on Wednesday.
Buchanan won its own Buck Invite Tennis Tournament at Leeper Park with 12 points. Three Rivers was second with eight points and Battle Creek Pennfield third with four.
The Bucks won just one singles championship, but took all four doubles titles to kick off its season with a bang.
Ryan Henckel and Jake Welsh defeated Three Rivers’ Ryan Seifert and Mark Graham at No. 1 doubles, while Buchanan’s Josh Whitfield and Corey Thompson defeated the Wildcats’ Tommy Kuehn and Dylan Hough at No. 2 doubles.
Agape Mpamira and Jalen Brown of Buchanan to the third doubles flight title with a win over Three Rivers’ Conner and Evan Brueck.
The No. 4 crown went to the Bucks’ John Backus and Dominic Remmo after their win over the Wildcats’ Phillip Bovee and Jermaine Hescoff.
The lone singles title captured by Buchanan was at the second flight where Tyler Lindorf defeated Three Rivers’ Tyler Hough.
The Bucks’ Derek Blank and John Haslock finished second at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
Battle Creek’s Jarrod James won the third singles championship and Three Rivers’ Blake Reeves won the title at fourth singles.
The Bucks are back at work on Saturday at they host the Buck Classic I at various local sites.
Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
