391 animals sold for $395,823

CASSOPOLIS – Cass County Fair’s youth market livestock auction Thursday sold 391 animals for $395,823, compared to the record $419,693 set in 2008, when 556 animals were sold.

Auction totals in 2007 were $403,421 and $370,440 in 2006.

In a record-setting sheep sale, Darlene Lowe purchased granddaughter Branna Wyant’s 136-pound grand champion for $30 a pound, or $4,080.

Buyers bought 72 beef, a record 99 dairy feeder steers, 64 lambs and 156 swine.

High prices included $3.75 for beef, $9.25 for dairy feeder, $13 for swine and $2,000 for the gallon of milk from the dairy barn.
