SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Thunderstorms halted play twice Tuesday, the second one ending play for the day, forcing the Girls Division to complete their first round on Wednesday morning at the AJGA Notre Dame Junior Open.

The Boys Division completed their first round Tuesday, with Corey Ziedonis of Indianapolis, leading by one stroke.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Notre Dame Junior Open is an 54-hole stroke play event being held at Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame. The tournament field consists of 75 Boys and 24 Girls, ages 12-18, from 15 states and four foreign countries. The par-71 course is being played at 6,908 yards for the Boys Division and 5,888 yards for the Girls Division.

Ziedonis started with a birdie on his first hole of the day and continued to card five more birdies to post a 2-under-par 69 in the first round.

“Today I putted very well, I was playing well until No. 11,” Ziedonis said. “Then I hit a mediocre shot into the bunker and struggled to get out but was able to sink a 10 foot putt for double bogey. That got my game going, a small victory even if it was for double.”

After his double-bogey on No. 11 he said his best birdie came on the par-4 431 yard No. 13 because he was able to gain his momentum back to finish strong to finish at even-par on the back nine.

“The greens were rolling well today and if you keep the ball in play it allows opportunities to for birdies,” Ziendonis said.

Tied for second are Adam Sumrall of South Bend, Ind., Charlie Phillips of Mount Vernon, Ohio, Jordan Niebrugge of Mequon, Wis., at 1-under-par 70. Rounding out the Boys Division and sitting in a tie for fifth are Theodore Lederhausen of Hinsdale, Ill., and Morgan Dobbins of Jackson, Ohio, at even-par 71.

Niles’s Chris Noble shot 40 and 39 to finish with a 79, 10 shots off the lead.

Only 12 of the 24 players in the Girls Division were able to finish the first round due to a second thunderstorm. The Girls Division will resume play at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to play the remainder of their holes.
