David Cleveland has been hired to replace veteran girls’ basketball coach Bill Weaver at Buchanan High School.

Cleveland has served as the Bucks’ junior varsity coach for several years. He has also directed the Junior Buck basketball program and the Buchanan Schools girls’ summer camp.

Cleveland’s experience with the girls’ basketball program at Buchanan is a plus as he takes the next step in his coaching career.

Cleveland was selected from among nine applicants.

He was Weaver’s assistant coach for four seasons and the Lady Bucks’ junior varsity coach for five years.

“Those are some real big shoes to fill,” Cleveland responded when asked about replacing Weaver. “Hopefully, I can come close to having the same type of success Bill did. He left the program in a good position.”

Cleveland said he wanted to continue the Buchanan tradition of competing for Lakeland Conference championships.

“Another goal is to get the girls to play to their highest potential,” he said. “This is a good group of kids and they have worked hard this summer. I think we can be one of the teams that can compete for the conference championship.”
